Swedes Triumph at Fanatic
New York (Chinatown Newswire) — The experienced and savvy Syrup Kidz ousted West Coast champs LA Vale 5:1 in a stunningly one-sided final match of the sixth annual Adidas Fanatic tournament last night.
The faux hawk sporting squad from Los Angeles went into an early lead but was ultimately comprehensively outplayed by the pretournament favorites from Sweden in front of an extremely partisan crowd.
Despite some confusion over the registration of at least three of Syrup’s players, the Tribeca-based design agency organized an impromptu victory celebration at Felix on West Broadway immediately after hoisting the cup last night.
Meanwhile, the thoughts of most members of the Chinatown Soccer Club were with their injured colleague Joel Barnard.
The smooth Colorado-born winger was brought down by a malicious challenge from the Real BIG team’s goalkeeper inside the first five minutes of the opening match and left the pitch clutching his left shoulder.
After a quick trip to the emergency room, Barnard was diagnosed with a broken collarbone but stayed true to his rugged nature and returned in time for the final.
In his absence, the CSC, the Krauts and PSYOP were cheered on by a capacity crowd during what turned out to be a beautiful afternoon on Manhattan’s West Side.
Just like in years past, several hundred spectators enjoyed the sunshine as well as the free beer and BBQ while taking in some sizzling soccer action.
All of the CSC-affiliated teams performed heroically in their respective groups but none managed to reach the semifinals in a closely contested run to the final four.
The CSC did take home the award for best jersey, however, while PSYOP was presented with a trophy honoring their outstanding supporters.
As the sun set over Pier 40, many of the players could be seen clutching beers and cheering on their friends on the Syrup team during the final game.
Coach Stochl even led a brief pitch invasion when his Swedish colleague Pierre Byman fired Syrup in front with a ferocious shot into the bottom corner, rounding off another fantastic Fanatic tournament in New York City.
