I do not think about this often, but what if there was no Roy Ayers? What if there was no Brooklyn Artist loft party scene in the seventies? No for lack of a better term, no Acid Jazz? Trained as a Modernist and the originator of his own self-proclaimed, Anarchitecture, Gordon Matta- Clark was a beacon for me as a I started to transform and buy into post-modernism. His stripped walls and chopped facades offered me the physical proof that the beauty is in the flaw and that art and design can be found everywhere and not necessarily by just those trained to do so. Beauty is time and utility and wear and erosion.

His restaurant FOOD also revolutionized the Soho, downtown art scene giving a daytime social scene to what was already a very strong night scene. He can be attributed in part to making every foreigner on earth coming here to buy something from the Burton and John Varvatos shops and me barely being able to enter my building on a Sunday.

Got to meet him on an Amtrak train recently. One of the coolest dudes that ever lived. Any doubt, check out his legendary book of style, “Rock Steady”.

Two weeks out of RISD film school, I was on Broadway waiting to cross Houston. Right next to me was Jim Jarmusch. Towering above me. Stranger than Paradise is still in my top 10 films ever. I decide to introduce myself. Hi Mr Jarmusch, I am a recent grad from RISD film school and I am a huge fan. He shook my hand and complimented RISD as a good school. He talked to me through two lights, which in new york city is a big fuckin deal. He didn’t have to talk to me at all. He wished me luck. His first three films made me want to be a filmmaker. This encounter kept me going strong for the next unemployed six months, even though I had no place to live and I couldn’t afford to eat. Most people who I tell this story to say he could have given me a job rather than just talked to me. I do not believe at that time he could have, and it is what I choose to believe to today.

WHEN THE sprawling, jagged, beautiful, wicked history of popular music is definitively assembled, the name of Lee Perry will be writ large. If his sole achievement had been to engineer Doctor Alimantado’s â€˜Best Dressed Chicken In Town’, a tune that fired the pimply imagination of John Lydon, he would have been entitled to a line at least. Or if he had only been the coproducer of The Clash’s fiercesome â€˜complete Control’ he’d have deserved a small paragraph.

But Perry was also the man behind some of the greatest records ever made, reggae or otherwise. And the politics that drew the latent genius of Robert Nesta Marley to the surface. And the brains, ears and hands that helped create dub, an innovation that altered the sound, the very possibilities, of black music as surely as Leiber and Stoller’s inspired orchestral drenching of The Drifters’ â€˜There Goes My Baby’ or the white-coated circuit-board wiz who gave soldered life to a micro monster and called it DMX.

Extremely underappreciated, Johnathan Richman was writing and performing incredible material right alongside The Talking Heads and Blondie, but from the wrong Coast. Later this band would feed the Talking Heads Jerry Harrison and The Modern Lovers would have one album vs. 15 plus from the Heads. Richman always was and remains fiercely and starchly independent and that has been his handicap and his brilliance. Buy this album today.
