A Sunday In Hell

Phillip Wood from Citizen Citizen turned me onto this film a few of days ago. A 1976 documentary by Danish filmmaker Jorgen Leth chronicles the Paris-Roubaix bicycle race which is largely considered one of the most grueling of the “cycling classics.” The “Hell” in the title refers to the terrain…”Much of the latter portion of the race takes place over “pave”: narrow, cobbled tracks that become choked with dust on dry days and treacherously slick and muddy on rainy days. For the riders it’s a challenge simply to keep going without puncturing a tire or crashing on the difficult cobbled roads.” Roger de Vlaeminck won the race four times topping both Eddy Merckx and Francsesco Moser who each have three.

I recently received a selection of t-shirts and stickers from my friend Mark Giglio. Mark and I met when we were both working at Apple a few years ago. He is an amazing illustrator — full of ideas and has contributed illustrations to several past issues of Dwell. Recently, Mark opened a studio and online store under the name Pen Pencil Stencil. Here you’ll find a selection of wallpapers, t’s, and quirky triangular calendars (download and fold).

A couple of the t-shirts are also available through 2k by Gingham. If you haven’t been there in a while definitely worth a look as they continue to add new artists and designers to the mix.

Utopia by the Sea

Check out the NYTimes today, there you’ll find a really nice article about Sea Ranch — one of my all time favorite escapes from San Francisco. The architecture is revered for its relationship to the environment. Truly an amazing place to spend a weekend lounging by the sea and a spectacular drive up Highway 1.

The Mollusk Family Poster Show

Mollusk surf shop is having a poster show this Saturday aptly titled the “The Mollusk Family Poster Show.” The show will feature a limited run of screen prints with a select group of artist that have been associated with the surf shop/gallery since the beginning. Several of the artist have also appeared regularly on “Intelligence” blog and throughout past issues of Arkitip. Participating artist include: Thomas Campbell, Jeff Canham, Kyle Field, Christopher Gentile, Rachel Kaye, Alex Kopps, John McCambridge, Geoff McFetridge, Serena Mitnik-Miller, Jay Nelson, Nathaniel Russell, Jeff Scharf and Todd St. John. Depressingly Awesome

My friend Andy Beach runs the ever eclectic blog Reference Library which is currently holding a Mini-Exhibition at Kiosk Shop in NYC. The show is composed of a selection of 50 vintage and non-vintage odds and ends which go a long way at capturing the vibe of Andy’s blog. The opening was this past Friday and the show is up until around December 7th.

The poster was set and printed by Colby Poster out of Los Angeles. These guys do all of those local election posters.

Werkplaats Book Bags for Stand Up Comedy

A while back Marco mentioned this little shop from Portland. They recently produced a limited series of book bags in collaboration with the students and faculty from WT in Arhnem, the Netherlands. I met Diana Kim, one of the shops founders, during a fellowship at the Walker Art Center several years ago. At the time, Diana was a performing arts curatorial assistant it’s nice to see that she is now lending her talents to curating a shop. The shop has a unique mix of jewelry, clothing, and printed matter.

NC State, 60th Anniversary Lecture

A week ago today, I had the opportunity to return to NC State, my former university, to discuss Dwell and spend a bit of time talking with students and past professors. I had an amazing time and really enjoyed connecting with so many new faces and sharing a bit of insight into the work we do at Dwell.

A big thank you goes out to Santiago Piedrafita, Meredith Davis, Denise Gonzales Crisp, Martha Scotford, and Silas Munro (Silas designed the poster below which announced the event).

Werkplaats Typografie: Starting from Zero

While visiting Seoul, I caught the opening of Starting from Zero an exhibition celebrating the 10 year anniversary of Werkplaats Typografie. The show features an extensive collection of printed matter, primarily posters and books, from past participants of the program. Curated by Na Kim and Karl Nawrot.

On view through November 30th.
