I have seen that Scott has been dropping some fantastic modernistic design and architecture on his blog, so i hope he wont be angry with me for putting out a small tribute to Denmarks most famous architect in modern times, JÃ¸rn Utzon .
JÃ¸rn passed away yesterday, 90 years old. Utzon was born in Copenhagen, the son of a naval engineer, and grew up in Denmark. From 1937 he studied architecture at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts and worked for Alvar Aalto and Frank Lloyd Wright. He started his own office in 1950 in Copenhagen. In 1957 he unexpectedly won the competition to design the Sydney Opera House. Although he had won six other architectural competitions previously, the Opera House was his first non-domestic design. The designs he submitted were also little more than preliminary drawings. One of the judges, Eero Saarinen, described it as “genius” and declared he could not endorse any other choice. As many know JÃ¸rn left Sydney long before the building was completed as he didnt get the needed support from new newly elected liberal party, JÃ¸rn never saw the Sydney Opera House again.
However , my personal strings to JÃ¸rn Utzon as an great architect is not the Sydney Opera House , but BagsvÃ¦rd Kirke , a church just north of Copenhagen.
When i first saw it i was still attending Danmarks Design school and our teacher wanted us to draw it on paper. I remember i just sat in the church for 4 hours without having made a single line on the paper , as i was just looking at the sealing where the lights moved the shapes and made the room magical in some way.
